What Are Sun Signs?

Hello, hope you all had a good day. For today’s post we are going to talk about you Sun Signs and over the next few weeks we will talk a little about each Sun Sign, starting with Aries and working our way to Pisces.

What is a Sun Sign? It is the sign of the zodiac that the Sun (our most powerful planet; is astrology we refer to the Sun as a planet), was travelling through at the exact time of your birth. The Sun spends approximately 1 month in each sign. Not only does the Sun give us warmth, energy and food, but it plays and important role in our horoscope, and in a lot of other ways it determines how others see us. Where the Sun is positioned in our chart controls our individuality, our distinctive style, and our drive to fulfill our goals in life.

I am sure that some of you have read your Sun Signs and thought that doesn’t fit me at all, that because your Sun Sign is only part of who you are, you also have a Moon Sign and other planets in your chart that are also a part of who you are. Each planet may be in different signs so you will see some of that signs characteristics is your personality.

Each of us is a complex and unique combination, unlike anyone else. Any attempt to give an accurate from only your Sun Sign falls into the kind of error that H.L. Mencken was referring to when he said that “for every complicated problem, there is a solution that is short, simple, and wrong.”

The only way you can get the complete picture of your personality is by looking at your entire birth chart, even then there may be some errors because we are not carved in stone. Every day were are changing a little we meet new people who play a part in our lives, as well as each experience that we have. However the person that we were born as reamins a big part of who we are, and our Sun Sign is the outlline of that person.

And now for some astrological background on the 12 signs of the zodiac. Since astrology was first recorded 5,000 years ago the 12 zodiac sings have acquired special associations, characteristics, and meanings. Hundreds of years before Christ, Greek philosophers formulated a theory called Man in Microcosm, which is that the human beingis a version of the cosmos. According to this theory everything in nature has a parallel in human beings, and thus humankind and the universe are linked together in a system of correlations. Out of this came the Hermetic Theory, from this grew a vast body of correspondences surrounding the 12 zodiac signs.

Some say that each astrological sign is a Mini Book of Knowledge and if you put all 12 signs together it will give you a picture of human beings; our bodies, minds, emotions and the surrounding world in which we live. The zodiac is, like the intricate Chinese box, a whole entity that can be taken apart and examined in different ways. The 12 signs of the zodiac can be divided into several groups, or numbers. They are divided into 2’s, 3’s, 4’s and 6’s.

Dualities

The 12 signs are divided inot 2 groups masculine and feminine. Six signs (Aries, Gemini, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Aquarius) are masculine and six are feminine (Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces). This is known as the duality of a sign. A masculine sign is diret & energitic. A feminine sign is receptive and magnetic. Keep in mind that the masculine and feminine attributes were given 2,000 years ago; today astrologers try to stay away from the sexism implicit in these distinctions. A masculine sign doesn’t mean that you are positive and forceful and a feminine sign doesn’t mean that you are negative and weak. Today’s termimology for a masculine is defined as outer-directed and strong through actions and the feminine sign is defined as self-contained and strong through inner reserves.

Triplicities

The 12 signs are also divided into 4 groups containing 3 signs called a triplicity, each being an element. The 4 elements are Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), Earth (Taurus, VIrgo, Capricorn), Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), and Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). The element symbolizes the fundemental characterizations of each sign.

Quadrupilcities

Next, each of the 12 signs are broken down into 3 groups each containing 4 signs called a quadruplicity. Each of these quadruplicity denotes as quality. There are 3 qualities Cardinal (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn), Fixed (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius), Mutable (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces). The quality signifies the sign’s interaction with the outside world.
Cardinal signs are enterprising and outgoing. They are the initiators of the zodiac. Fixed signs are resistant to change. They are the perfectors and finishers of the zodiac. And lastly Mutable signs are flexible, versatile and adaptable. They are able to adjust to different circumstances.
Each of the zodiac signs fall into a different combination. No one sign has exactly the same duality, element and quality as another sign. For example Aries is a Masculine, Fire, Cardinal; there are no other Masculine, Fire, Cardinal signs in the zodiac. Because each of the signs has a unique combination, they each express the characteristics of its quality, element and duality differently.

Polarities

Last each of the 12 signs are broken down into 6 groups of 2 called a polarity or opposite. Each sign in the zodiac has a polarity, which is its opposite sign in the other half of the zodiac. The 2 signs express opposite characteristics.
Aries and Libra; Aries is the sign of self and Libra is the sign of partnerships.

Taurus and Scorpio; Taurus is the sign of personal possessions and Scorpio is the sign of legacies and shared possessions.

Gemini and Sagittarius; Gemini is the sign of self-expression and Sagittarius is the sign of philosophy and higher thinking.

Cancer and Capricorn; Cancer is the sign of home life and Capricorn is the sign of public life.

Leo and Aquarius; Leo is the sign of personal pleasure and creativity and Aquarius is the sign of hopes and ideals on a large scale.

Virgo and Pisces; Virgo is the sign of work and self-improvement and Pisces is the sign of dreams and self-delusion.
Each of the 12 signs is attached to special associations such as lucky numbers, lucky days, special colors, planets, metals, jewels, cities, etc. Each sign also has pitfalls and areas of danger attached to it.
